We are looking for an au pair to share our daily life with someone from a different culture than ours and fluent in English. We would like this person to watch our 2 children, 1 year old and 3 and a half years old. We have 2 other children part time whom the au pair will not have to take care of although she or he will of course be able to play with them. They are 8 and 11 and a half years old. They are with us every Wednesday evening and every other weekend.
We live in a big old house, with a yard and a garden. The au pair will have a room on the 2nd floor, next to that of our 11.5 years old child. We also have 1 bathroom on the 1st floor and a powder room on the ground floor.
We are a couple of independents (entrepreneurs), we are mainly teleworking with often trips for the dad, less for the mom.
Currently, I am, the mother, the one who takes care of the children. We already had an au pair but we broke the contract because there was no desire on the part of the girl to share the daily life of the family. This is indeed an important point for us. What differentiates in our opinion the nanny from the au pair is that we continue to see the au pair outside the hours of pure childcare, because we live together. We want to do activities together, share meals, etc. We are therefore looking for a curious person, eager to learn French and French culture, not a person who goes up to his room as soon as I have finished working and can take care of the children. In addition, I need help during meals to eat more peacefully: I would like the au pair to help us clean the high chair and under the table after meals.
For the household, the ideal for us is to divide the tasks, so that it is not work for the au pair but a contribution to daily life. We could for example say that the cleaning is done by the au pair, the dad or the mom every week, which means that everyone does it 1 week out of 3.
Ironing would be excluded from household chores, as would shopping.
Thus, we could initially agree on a 25-hour contract for sole custody of the children.
We are flexitarians, we eat very little meat, usually at lunchtime on weekends when we have all the children. We eat fish and eggs more often. But most of our meals are vegan. If the au pair wishes to have animal protein at each meal, it will be possible, she or he can prepare something in addition to the meal that we prepare.
We are also very keen on everything that is natural, whether in terms of food where we favor organic products, cosmetics or in terms of way of life. We never go to fast food, we don't buy sodas or candies, for example.
As for the care of the children, what is important for us is that the au pair only uses the mobile phone in case of real necessity and that the screens are not shown to the children. We appreciate that the person is proactive, especially with the 3 and a half year old to create a link with him and offer him activities. He likes scooter, balance bike or bicycle rides, playing with trains and cars, doing manual work, listening to music and dancing, singing, playing at doing chores and playing at imitating the daily life of a family with stuffed animals and dolls. He expresses himself very well and needs to be in the exchange when he plays with someone. The 2 children take care of themselves very well too.
Finally, the spirit of our family is jovial, relaxed and we like to go out, do activities, discover new places, party and meet new people, be in discussion, share convivial moments. Meals are so important to us, we all eat together and it can take 30 min to 1 hour.
I specify all this to avoid disappointments as we experienced with the previous au pair. :-p
