A motivated person who is friendly and has excellent people skills. I would like to undertake a job to expand my skills in and gain more experience. I am very hard working and willing to learn.
At present, I am second year student doing primary teaching at University.
I am able to get on with, and work with people from all backgrounds. I have a cheerful and outgoing personality, having developed much confidence in working with people from volunteering and daily University seminars and tutorials. I also have plentiful experience in education, evidenced through placement in schools and nurseries, and also through volunteering.
School work experience placement - nursery
I worked with children aged 3 to 6 years. I helped them play, care for them and helped with their food choices. Through this, I understood how imperative play is in development and learning of young children, and how important it is that learning through play is incorporated in the curriculum. I also learnt to work effectively as part of a team, and expanded many of my skills including the ability to work under pressure. One of the main roles I held was to assist in the setting up and clearing of equipment and resources both indoors and outdoors.
Hazelwood School
Volunteer
During my time at Hazelwood, I worked with a range of children of different abilities and ages. I had the task of watching teaching communicate with pupils and shadowing the work of teachers. This improved my confidence in interacting with all kinds of learners. Furthermore, by watching how play is used in learning and development I have understood its importance.
Glendale Primary School
Through this placement, I had the chance to critique my professional practice and carry out many learning experiences with pupils in the younger years. Through conducting learning experiences, I learnt the importance of communication and interaction with pupils to create a fun and enjoyable environment.
At present, I am undertaking a work placement at a primary school. During this placement, my task was/is to observe different approaches to teaching. Moreover, I regularly collaborate with the class teacher to plan different activities with pupils, ensuring activities comply with the Curriculum for Excellence documentation. This has improved my observational and communication skills.
Whilst on placement at a nursery this year, I was responsible for observing the approaches to learning and teaching in the early years sector. Through observation, I learnt of effective methods that could be used to design and implement my own learning experiences for pupils in the nursery.
Public Speaking
Over the last three months, I have given presentations to many schools about the merits of studying. This has improved my confidence greatly, and has enabled me to become competent in speaking to a large audience. Furthermore, I have done many presentations at university, further enhancing my skills in public speaking.
Hobbies and Interests
In my spare time I like to do a range of sports.
I am currently undertaking a Masters Degree in Education with a Primary Teaching Qualification and am in Second Year. Much of the work undertaken at university through lectures, seminars and tutorials has involved understanding and applying different theories and approaches to children’s learning, understanding curricula developing good written and verbal communication skills.
Masters in Education 1 focused on different approaches to children's learning and development. Through my lectures, I have developed a sound knowledge of using a play based approach in learning and development, and I feel that learning through play is a highly beneficial approach. This has been evidenced by many theorists such as Jean Piaget and his view of the learner as a 'Little Scientist' i.e. children learning through discovery. I hold the view that learning through play is imperative in the early stages as it contributes to children’s learning positively.
I have also grasped a firm understanding of the Scottish Curriculum because that was the main focus of lectures at University in Semester One.
